This week, in our Meet the Team series, we sat down to speak to Centre Manager of one of Business First’s twin business centres in Liverpool, Jennifer Brereton, to find out a little bit more about who she is and what she does at Business First and beyond.
As always, we asked some serious questions, and some pretty daft ones, too…
What’s your full name and job title?
“My name is Jennifer Brereton, and I’m the Centre Manager of one of Business First’s Liverpool business centres.”
Before working here, what’s the most unusual or interesting job you’ve had?
“Before working at Business First I was monitoring looked after children on behalf of local authorities across the country, whilst studying Business and HR at Liverpool, John Moores University. And, many moons ago, I was a party leader at a Build-a-Bear workshop and often dressed up as Paulette, the shop’s bunny mascot.”
If you could swap jobs with one person in the company, who would it be and why?
“If I could swap jobs with anyone, it would be Richard [Business First’s Estate Manager], as I’m a dab-hand at DIY and I enjoy helping people.”
What three words do you think best describe Business First?
“Vibrant, diverse, busy.”
What three words do you think best describe you?
“Friendly, helpful, diligent.
What’s the most challenging thing you’ve ever had to do whilst working here?
“That’s a tough one to answer. Every day there’s a new challenge, be that providing the voiceover for a tenant’s promotional video, or invading every office in the building, looking for a 4ft plant that has gone missing. Seriously, that has happened!”
What’s your favourite film?
“I don’t really have one favourite film. I love a typical chick-flick. Legally Blonde and PS I Love You are two that I can watch again and again.”
Do you have a nickname at work? What is it?
“My nickname at work – courtesy of Billy, one of the cleaners – is Marg 2. Margaret was the Centre Manager before me.”
What’s your favourite place to travel to?
“My two favourite places are Santorini and Las Vegas, both for very different reasons.”
How do you define success?
“I define success by happiness in your job and life in general. I believe that if you can be happy, regardless of your income or situation, then you are truly successful in life.”
If a film was made of your life, who would you want to play you and why?
“I think, that if someone was to play me in a movie, I would like it to be Melissa McCarthy.”
If you could be any animal for a day, what animal would you be and why?
“I would probably, if I could be an animal for the day, choose to be a panda, they’re clumsy without a care in the world.”
Who is your idol?
“I don’t have many idols, as such, but characteristics that I admire and idolise in people are: honesty, and; the ability to empower others.”
What is your guilty pleasure?
“My guilty pleasure is a bath that is painfully hot, so the kids can’t jump in with me. Add a glass of wine and a good book and I’m very happy.”
Do you have any weird phobias?
“I don’t have any weird phobias, but I am scared of heights, and I have an awful fear of spiders. So much so I have to get Ange from Viva to come and save the day when one violently intrudes in my reception.”
If you could choose one superpower, and only one, what would it be?
“If I had to choose one superpower, it would be to be a mind reader, or human lie detector. I swear, I don’t have trust issues, I’m just out and out nosey!”
